My personal definition of “Entrepreneur”

Sometimes I am asked about my personal definition of “Entrepreneur”. There are lots of them around there but what I like the most is to say that an entrepreneur is a person that sees the same as everybody else, in contrast to the rest, decides to do something about it.

Officenet is a good example of this. Andy Freire and I did not invent anything. The opportunity to create a company to profesionalize the office supplies industry was obvious and had been there for a long time. We were not even the first ones to see it. After Officenet was launched, many people told us they had thought there was potential to start up a company to do just that. Andy and I were merely the first ones (in Argentina and Brazil) to cut to the chase and get going.

I like this definition because it separates the Entrepreneur from the Visionary and desacralizes the idea that you have to have a special gift to start a venture.

Opportunities are there around us, at all times. Everyone sees them.
Rolling up your sleeves and doing is the key difference

The good thing about office supplies and office technologies is that it is relatively easy to get into. However to make it a successful business you have to do something different from the rest, this is where it gets tough. I have to admire Andy for doing this and being successful.
