Endeavor at The Economist

In this week’s edition of The Economist in the Business section they
published a full article about Endeavor!

For those who don’t know about it, Endeavor is a Foundation created by
Linda Rottenberg and Peter Kellner that helps entrepreneurs in emerging markets around the World.

In particular, they helped Andy Freire and myself a lot in the early days.

If you want to read the article, which also talks about Wences Casares, you may click here:

Whats is interesting - how quick things change in this globalized world. Only five or ten years ago there were two countries that had similar starting positions: Argentina and Russia. There was a major economical crash in Russia in 1998, in 2001 Argentina went through crisis as well. Both countries are rich of natural resources, both countries have multi-national population.
And yet we can see how they’re moving in opposite directions.
At the moment starting new business in Russia is extremely difficult and corruption is getting worse and worse. Foreign organization like this one have become easy targets for corrupted authorities. Dependance on the price of oil is enourmous however there is no incentive for oil producing companies to spend money on maintenance and renovation of exisiting ageing infrastructure. The whole thing is a mess.
I think Argentina and the rest of Latin America is on the right path. It hasn’t been inflated as much as Russia and other markets. What is even more important - people do not want to leave Argentina as much as they’re leaving Russia. Story of your success is a good illustration of that fact.

There is a saying that states “the grass looks always greener on the other side of the fence”!!! Latin America may be headed in the right direction, but most of what you say about Russia could also be said about Argentina…

Maybe it is a case of too many “Bilinkis” in both countries??!! :-)

The grass might be greener on the other side but after what has just happened here (and still going on !) between Russia and Georgia i think you’d understand better what i’m talking about. It’s not just about crippled economy and corruption anymore.
