Identity 2.0 and the challenges to privacy

How private is your privacy today?

The fact that there is no danger in adopting 2.0 tools does not mean they are free from generating some serious challenges for our privacy. But, let me tell all those who wouldn’t show their photos or share their stuff, the following: our World today is such that it doesn’t matter whether we want to have our stuff online or not, it will be there anyway! More so, unless you live in a nutshell, mostly sure they are already in it. If you didn’t put your data there, a friend of yours did. Or, even worse, an enemy!

The 2.0 tools may help our hidden desires for exhibitionism to come out and develop up to a point where it might be hazardous. So, before taking the risk, we better think clearly where we want to put the limit: which stuff we want to share and with whom. Most of the tools allow you to restrict who will see what.
Given the fact that not being exposed in the 2.0 World is not an option I recommend to take control of the process.
Let me give you an example. Almost in every anniversary of Officenet and New Year parties a karaoke is organized. I was always asked to sing but, as you can easily imagine the reason why, I persistently rejected such a ludicrous proposition. At one moment, tired of the pressure exerted over me from people who wanted to make fun of me, I promised them that I would sing at the 10th anniversary. Three long years remained ahead of me. But, inevitable, the day arrived and… I sang.
The video is on Youtube. Guess who put it there? Yes, I did.
Did I do it because I was dying for the World to laugh at me? No! I acted that way because various people had filmed the “show” and I if I did not do it someone else would. As those shameful images would inexorably be seen by who knows who, I chose to have control over them, by editing the video the best I could. And even though nothing could be done to better even a little my singing performance, I made myself sure that the video was the best quality possible.

To turn your back on the 2.0 world can only lead you to lose control over which will be your online identity. The definition of privacy is changing every minute and to ignore this fact only makes thing worse.
